You can put text above and below your gallery now. It used to be broken in that it would not display anything other than the video gallery, but it’s fixed now.

See? You can put text below as well.

Hi – really nice! Quick question – when you click on a thumbnail – the page loads at the bottom – or rather it goes to the bottom and I have to scroll back to the top – any way to fix this issue?

  2. xondie Says:

Hm. I’ll have to look into this. That doesn’t happen on my browser. Could you tell me which browser you are using?

  3. Josh Says:

    I’m using safari…

  4. xondie Says:

Ah, I see what you mean. I’ll see about getting that fixed. If not today, then I’ll fix it Sunday. Thanks for letting me know!

  5. joe Says:

Does it work with the newest version of wordpress? Or rather, version 2.5? I tried to implement it and got an error, so I deactivated it.

    thanks.

  6. xondie Says:

This blog is 2.5. I also have it running on WordPress-MU and also 2.3.3 (running on IIS).

  7. xondie Says:

Josh, I believe I have fixed the issue of the page jumping to the bottom when you click on a thumbnail.

Known outstanding items still left to do:
1 – replace some string-replace hackiness with regex
2 – fix a bug where videos with certain characters in the description don’t load properly via their javascript call

  8. xondie Says:

OK, I fixed some outstanding bugs.

1 – I removed some very hacky string replace function calls in favor of using regex. Most of the blatant hackiness is now gone from this plugin.

2 – The bugs I was seeing with certain description text is now fixed.

Let me know if anyone finds any problems with it and I’ll fix them as soon as I can.

  9. Jeff MacArthur Says:

Could you possibly the more conventional arrow with page numbers at the bottom? It’s not good usability to have people clicking through the arrows with no idea of how many pages there are in the set, so this would be a great improvement I think.

    Just something like the typical…

    …would be wonderful!

  10. Jeff MacArthur Says:

OK, so I made the first typo but I guess my example got take out b/c it thought it was html :-) .

So, could you possibly incorporate the more conventional arrows with page numbers at the bottom…

    [left arrow] Previous 1 2 3 4 5 Next [right arrow]

    Thanks!

    Jeff

  11. xondie Says:

Jeff – That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve put it on my to-do list. It will probably be next week before I am able to work on this.

  12. xondie Says:

Jeff, I haven’t forgotten about your request. We have been very busy with some client website work (which is great) and haven’t had a chance.

  13. xondie Says:

OK, Jeff, I finally added pagination to the plugin. Let me know if this suits your needs. You can see it in action in the video gallery examples here.

It may need a more fancy system for galleries with many many pages to have something like 1 2 3 …. 99 100, but I think I’ll leave it simple until someone needs something more sophisticated. I think this will work for the vast majority.

  14. beracun Says:

    hallo xondie,
    simple and powerfull module
now i can create a video gallery in minutes
    really thanks
my quesstion is how to make a video gallery on this example page? what code u use?

  15. xondie Says:

    Hi Beracun,

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by your question. On this example page, the gallery is added in the usual way according to the instructions. This is a WordPress site so I installed the WordPress module and then added [Insert Video Gallery videojazz] in the content and it showed up.

  17. harshal Says:

    Hello,

I am having pagination problem.. for my site pls let me know what to do for that..

    thanks

  18. xondie Says:

Harshal – What is the url to get to your video gallery?

  19. Eve Says:

    Hello Xondie,
Thanks for your great plug-in – i love that it looks cool, functions nicely and you can have vids from multiple hosts.
One question: The top “featured” / big video isn’t always loading in my site. Sometimes it helps to dump the cache and refresh, but sometimes it will continue to show only the lower thumbnails.
I am donating now, please help thanks,
    Eve

  20. pandora battery Says:

Nice plugin! Is there a way to make the video load with having to click it?

  21. xondie Says:

    Hi Eve,

I’ve notice that happen on occasion as well. I don’t know this for sure, but I think this results when the connect to vodpod is slow for some reason. So it doesn’t get the data back for the main video before the page loads with the html. You’re the first one to mention it so I hadn’t worried about it. Now that I know others are seeing this behavior as well, I’ll try to see if there is something I can do about it. I am open to anyone’s suggestions/ideas.

  22. xondie Says:

pandora – Thanks for writing. Glad you like the plugin!

It’s theoretically possible to change some PHP code and make the main video autoplay when you first load the page. But it isn’t a feature that is built into the current plugin that can be changed with configuration or anything like that.

  23. Korhan Says:

Is this plugin compatible with wp 2.7.x

  24. xondie Says:

Yes, I have tested it on 2.7.x

  25. x0x0 Says:

nice plugin, i’m using it. i just have a quick question.. my website’s background is blue.. is there any way to change the gallery bg color to something else other than white?

  26. xondie Says:

x0x0 – So glad the plugin is working out for you. If you know CSS, you can change any of the colors you wish in gallery.css. I think if you search for background-color (I think) you should find it pretty easily.

  27. Asaf Says:

Awesome plugin! just started using it.

just one question: is it any way to show the direct link for the video?
I mean, not the javascript one, but a link that the users could access the video directly, and won’t have to browse the entire gallery to watch it.

Thanks a lot for this one!

    Asaf.

  28. xondie Says:

Asaf – I think this is a very good idea. I will implement it when I get a chance. Not sure when that will be though.

  29. Asaf Says:

    alright, that’s great.
hope you will update me when it will happen.

    Cheers ;)

  30. xondie Says:

Asaf – I have now added a link to the original video from the gallery. On occasion, a video will come in from Vodpod that does not provide the “original url” field and in those cases, no link will appear. Otherwise, there will be a link under the description that says “Original Video URL”.

I just checked it in to the WordPress SVN, so hopefully it will be available for download soon. I guess just wait until the “Last Updated” date says 2009-7-20.

  31. xondie Says:

Actually, the “Last Updated” date still hasn’t changed, but I see in SVN that the correct version is there. So maybe give it a try anyway.

  32. Asaf Says:

First of all, many thanks for your great efforts! I’ve checked the new version and it worked brilliantly.

however, it wasn’t what I really meant. what I was looking for, if there’s a way, is to show the “internal” link of the video, in the current site.

I know it’s available through Joomla’s Seyret component (http://img39.imageshack.us/i/seyretexample.jpg/), and was hoping that you could bring it to WordPress’s world ;)

    again, thanks a lot.

  33. xondie Says:

Ohhhh – that’s a GREAT idea! Haha. Sorry, I misunderstood. That would be tricky but I think it should be possible. I think. Not sure actually. Well….I’ll have to get back to you in a while on that one too.

Thanks (again) for the suggestion Asaf!

  34. Laura Says:

Thanks for this great plugin. It was really easy to set up. My question is about vodpod itself, I guess: how do you change the thumbnail image for a video? There’s a link that says “replace thumbnail”, but it doesn’t do anything. When I click on the thumbnail in the edit panel, it greys out but I’m not sure what to do.

    Thanks,
    Laura

  35. xondie Says:

    Laura –

I’m afraid I don’t know too much about the details of using vodpod itself. I have always found the guys over at vodpod to be very responsive to questions though, so you ought to try contacting them.

  36. josh Says:

hey xondie Awesome plugin! I am having the same problem as eve except here in korea the main video never loads, even when the cache is clear. Should I inquire with vodpod or is there something I can do.
My friend suggested that I just embed the first video and see if I can have the clicked gallery video replace. Would this be possible?
thanks for all your hard work.
    josh

  37. xondie Says:

Sorry about that Josh. It’s a known bug. It doesn’t happen for everyone and it doesn’t happen all the time. I think it occurs when the data comes back too slowly. This is on my schedule to fix in the short term, but it might be a couple of weeks before I even start to look at it.

  38. xondie Says:

Josh and others with this problem, I believe I have fixed the problem with the main video not loading when you first load the page. It also no longer uses fopen so hopefully that problem is cleared up for people as well.

  39. Ishu Krishna Says:

    Hi there,

Great plugin. I literally looked for days to find this! I have two questions. How do I remove the pagination from the bottom. I am displaying fixed videos and even though there is not a next page the Next is appearing. I plan on only showing 4 videos so I don’t need the pagination at all.

Second question. Is there a way to move the thumbnail to the top or to the side. Due to the size of the page , users might not see the thumbnails and realize that they can click on any to view in the video. If it is at the top of the page they will figure it out easier. Please let me know how I can do this. Thanks!

    Ishu

  40. Ishu Krishna Says:

I figured out the pagination removal. I just need to figure out how to move the video thumbnails now. Ideally on the sides or the top. I can do either.

    Thanks for your help!

    Ishu

  41. xondie Says:

    Hi Ishu,

Sorry I did not respond sooner. Your first comment must have come at a busy time for me.

You can move the thumbnails fairly easily by just moving the iframe line. Do a search for “

This will print it at the top. It would be much more complex to have them appear along the side.

  42. xondie Says:

Whoops, my comment didn’t come through properly.

    That should have said:
Do a search for iframe (with an opening angle bracket in front of it) and you will see it. Then move it up in the code. You will want to put it above the line that prints the vp_video_player div, and below the line that prints the vp_container div.

  43. Ishu Says:

    Xondie,

This didn’t work. In the file vodpod_gallery.php. I moved the container div above the iframe and the the video player div under the iframe. This didn’t work. So then I moved the gallery div right under the iframe. This too didn’t work. Am I in the right file? What am I doing wrong?

    Ishu

  44. xondie Says:

    Ishu,

If I am looking at the right page (your Reels page) it doesn’t look like the iframe is moved to the correct place. Not sure if you moved it back when it didn’t work. Right now you have the iframe between the CLOSING divs that I had mentioned, but it needs to be with the OPENING divs.

Try adding the iframe line after the OPENING vp_video_player div tag and see if that works.

  45. xondie Says:

Ishu – re-reading your comment, I wonder if you went about this the right way, so I want to restate in case I was unclear earlier. You should not be moving around the divs. The divs should stay where they were originally. You only want to cut and paste the iframe line and move that to the correct place, under the opening vp_video_player.

  46. Ishu Says:

    xondie,

Sorry I am not catching on. This is what I tried doing first, and it didn’t work. Can you please tell me what file and what line exactly and where exactly to move it to. The entire statement that needs to be moved and the entire statement of where it should be moved to. I have tried all combinations and it’s not working. I only found one line starting with <iframe and the entire statement was rather long.

    ‘.”\n”;

  47. Ishu Says:

Thanks again for all your help and quick responses. You are great, and I love your plugin.

I tried what you say and now I just get a white box above the player. no thumbnails. Any ideas? If you want to take this offline, my email is ishukrishna@gmail.com.

  48. xondie Says:

Oh, I think you need to also move those few PHP lines that first define the variables that are passed. $vodpod_user, $per_page, and a couple of others. I am not at my computer right now so can’t look at the code, but if you can’t figure out which lines, I will look when I get home. They need to be moved above the iframe line.

  49. Ishu Krishna Says:

They are contained within the iframe line before you close it and I did move it when I moved it originally. Do i need to extract just the parameters out? Please do email me ishukrishna@gmail.com. Thanks again for all your help.

  50. CER Says:

    Xondie,
Thank for this plugin that seems usefull.
I try to implant it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_3_m6I0p9k
but as you can see, it doesn’t work…
I use the curl version because my host doesn’t allow the get-file function.
    Do you have a solution?
    Thank a lot

    Ced

  51. CER Says:

Sorry, this is the correct URL: http://www.cer-ge.ch/news/?page_id=1375

  52. xondie Says:

CER – You need to input your vodpod name as all lower case. In my most recent version of the regular plugin, I have fixed that so that my code makes it all lower case before sending to the vodpod API, but I have not yet updated it in the curl version.

  53. CER Says:

Thanks for your very speedy answer!
    All is working good now…
    Best regards

  54. Randy Says:

Fantastic plugin..everything i was looking for except i dont know how to disable autoplay and i need to have a few accounts on the same page. i dont want all the main videos autoplaying at the same time!

  55. xondie Says:

    Randy,

Usually, the first main video does not autoplay when the page first loads. Normally it only autoplays once you choose a thumbnail. Can you show me an example where it is autoplaying the video when you first load the page? It might be that videos from a particular video site are being loaded with autoplay turned on. I might be able to fix that.

  56. Randy Says:

ok. you were right it was just that particular video. The problem im having now is when i place more than 1 gallery on the same page, videos only play in Gallery that is at the top. For instance if i have 2 galleries 1 for Music videos(at the top) and 1 for live performances(at the bottom)..When i click the thumbnails in live performances the video will play in in the music video category. forcing you to scroll back up to view the video..it wouldnt play in its own category.

  57. xondie Says:

Yikes. I can see why that might happen. I guess I didn’t test that scenario.

I’ll have to fix this. I’ll try to get to it this weekend, if at all possible. I’ll let you know when it’s fixed.

    Thanks for letting me know!

  58. Randy Says:

    YES! Thank you sooooo much.

  59. Randy Says:

Hey Just wondering if you got a chance to look into my problem. Thanks Again

  60. xondie Says:

Not yet, Randy. It’s on my list and I’ve been thinking on how to fix the code. Sorry it’s taken me so long to get to it.

I think I can actually get to this tonight though. I’ll let you know. It’s my #1 priority with respect to this plugin.

  61. xondie Says:

Randy – Thanks for hanging in there. I’ve finally got that bug fixed. Thanks again for letting me know about it.

  62. Randy Says:

THANK YOU AGAIN, It is working Superb, this plugin is the best thing since sliced bread. peace

  63. Lee Says:

    Hi
This looks like a great plugin.
Any chance it will work with local video content from my machine?
Im sure there are many people who would love that feature.

  64. xondie Says:

    Lee,

No, it is not possible to to use it for local video content, and it cannot be expanded to work this way. That functionality would require a complete rewrite of the plugin.

  65. Mike Shez Says:

    HI Xondie,

Brilliant plugin, it must be said.

The vodpod was working perfectly fine for me, but after the client fondled with the admin side (why oh why?) I get that file_get_contents(…) error. I’ve tried:

1)placing the php.ini in the root WP folder
2)installing Curl 3 after removing the original (theres an error about header not being found)
3)tried reinstalling the original numerous times, but file_get_contents(..) error pops up all the time.

You’re plugin is perfect and I do no want to go on a never ending search to find another plugin, quite frankly theres none like yours :D .

Do you have any advice for me, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

    Thankyou.

  66. xondie Says:

    Mike,

So glad you like the plugin! For what it’s worth, I never give my clients access to the administrative functions of the site for this very reason.

It’s hard to say without seeing the site, but is it possible that the client upgraded to the latest version? The configuration options have changed and I could see the plugin getting confused if it was getting the wrong parameters. If you re-uploaded the older version of the plugin, perhaps the client had already saved it with the new settings and so it is still blowing up the old version too.

Can you send me the url to the page? I might be able to tell just from looking. info (at) xondie (dot) com

  67. indie Says:

    Hello,

I am trying to use your exceptional plugin on my site. I tried the 3.1.1 and I got the file_get_contents() issue.

Then i deleted the folder and now tried to install the 3.0 version but it is giving me “Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.” error.

I have tried to reinstall the earlier one also, which installs perfectly and uninstall and completely delete both also , but still stuck. Your timely help would be really appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  68. kris Says:

I’d like the YouTube text not to show up underneath the featured video because I have to scroll down too far to see the rest of the videos. Is there a way to just have the video show up? Everything else works great!

  69. xondie Says:

You can accomplish that by commenting out 2 lines:

In the file vodpod_gallery.php, comment out line 340 (which reads: $this->description .= $desc;)

In the file vodpod_gallery_thumbs.php, comment out line 137, which looks the same.

  70. Kris Says:

    Hi guys -

I’m having some of the same issues, and my apologies ahead of time – I’m not a developer, nor to I quite understand which version works with what.

ISSUE: I’m getting the following error when trying to display a video collection:

Warning: file_get_contents(http://api.vodpod.com/v2/users/knedopak/collections/films & trailers/videos.xml?api_key=1993b813d6cc8293&per_page=1) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! in /home2/nedopakc/public_html/wp-content/plugins/vodpod-video-gallery/vodpod_gallery.php on line 221

I’ve tried adding the recommended line of code to my php.ini file:
    allow_url_fopen = On
(I added this at the end of the file… was that right?)

Still no luck. I’ve got the latest version of WordPress and the Vod Pod gallery plugin.

    Thanks!!!

  71. Kris Says:

    D’oh! Here’s my page: http://www.kristennedopak.com/reels-videos/

  72. xondie Says:

    Kris,

Your collection id should be filmtrailers, not films & trailers.

Note the url of you vodpod gallery page:
    http://vodpod.com/knedopak/filmstrailers

  73. Kris Says:

That worked, thanks! Another question: My videos don’t match the order I have them on the Vodpod site. How can I match the two?

    http://www.kristennedopak.com/reels-videos/

  74. xondie Says:

Hm, you know, I think that is a bug in my plugin that I can probably fix. I’ll take a look at it in the next day or two and let you know.

  75. Michele Says:

Same problem here… I organized the video on vodpod, but on my site the collection’s order won’t change. I suppose it just keeps the order I added them. Hope this is fixable…

  76. xondie Says:

Hi Michele – Yes, I can fix that and I will do it as soon as I can. I’m traveling right now and probably won’t get to it for a few days. So sorry for the delay.

  77. Michele Says:

Thank you very much. Is it also possible not to show the original description of the video from youtube? So that I can replace it just with the one I’ll write in vodpod… Otherwise I get both of them in my blog.
Thanks a lot for your work. I find you’re plugin the best one for managing videos in wordpress!

  78. xondie Says:

OK, I’ve updated the plugin to use the sorting order of the vodpod gallery (previously was using the order in which the videos were added, I think).

I also added a couple of minimal error messages which will hopefully allow people to trouble shoot the most common problems.

  79. xondie Says:

Michele, I’m not sure if there is a way to get one description over the other. If you can provide me with your vodpod account name and collection name, I can look at the XML that is being returned and see if there is a way to discern one from the other. If you’d rather, you can email me at info(at)xondie(dot)com

Oh, and keep a video or two with the duplicate comments in your gallery so I can see an example.

  80. Alison Says:

    Hey Xondie,

I noticed on the above example, as well as on my site, that the video descriptions initially put a slash in front of any apostrophes. Once those videos are clicked, the slashes don’t show up anymore, but I would love to find a way to make sure they don’t show up in the first place.

On another note, I just recently started using your video gallery and it’s a terrific tool, I’m thrilled to get to use it – thank you!

  81. xondie Says:

    Alison,

Sounds like I have a bug. I’ll get it fixed in the next few days. Thanks!

  82. xondie Says:

    Alison,

The latest version of the plugin fixes the backslash issue. Next time your plugin asks you to update, that bug should be fixed.

  83. hollister clothing Says:

  84. Brian Says:

I am using WordPress 3.1. I am not sure if it is compatible entirely with the newest version because on my page the plugin doesn’t show a proper iframe. It shows an iframe to a 404 error page.

It should show the thumbnails and pagination from:
    http://bgallz.org/wp-content/plugins/vodpod-video-gallery/vodpod_gallery_thumbs.php?u=bgallz&c=bgallz&vpp=8

But that is a 404 error.

The one here doesn’t do that:
    http://www.xondie.com/resources/wp-content/plugins/vodpod-video-gallery/vodpod_gallery_thumbs.php?u=anime-omega&c=anime-omegafrgd&t=&vpp=8&gid=4anime-omegafrgd

  85. Tonya Says:

Hi, this is a really great plug in! I would like to know that if I upload videos to your site, can I upload the video gallery to any website or blog by pasting in some HTML code? I do not use WordPress yet, so that is why I was asking.

    Thanks!
    Tonya

  86. xondie Says:

Tonya, this plugin requires WordPress in order to work. It cannot by just pasting HTML.

Brian, I know I’ve seen this problem before, but am not sure off hand why it isn’t working. I can look at this for you on Thursday – so sorry for the delay.

  87. xondie Says:

    Brian,

I have updated my site to 3.1 and everything still works ok. So I don’t think that’s what’s causing the 404 error. I used your exact iframe link but substituted my domain and the thumbnails come through ok:
    http://xondie.com/resources/wp-content/plugins/vodpod-video-gallery/vodpod_gallery_thumbs.php?u=bgallz&c=bgallz&vpp=8

So I think it’s a server issue of some sort. I’m not exactly sure what is causing it. Possibly you have too strict of permissions on the video gallery plugin folder or on the files within the gallery plugin? I’d try adjusting those permissions and see if it helps.

  88. Brian Says:

I used your iframe to see if it works, and it did.

However I will still need to use my iframe for the links to work.

Now the video isn’t displaying, which I don’t understand because I haven’t changed anything. I tried adjusting the permissions on the folder and files but it made no difference.

I was looking in the plugin, and the error should only display when:
(!$data), when $data is the file_get_contents($api_url). The API Url displays fine when I go to it:
    http://api.vodpod.com/v2/users/bgallz/collections/bgallz/videos.xml?api_key=1993b813d6cc8293&sort=ranking&per_page=1

    Thanks for the help.

  89. xondie Says:

For anyone wondering about progress on Brian’s problem, right now it looks like it is some type of conflict with another plugin.

  90. Anthony Akpan Says:

Hey i need to know how to change the php code of the gallery so the thumbnails are shown to the right of the main video player, not at the buttom…..

  91. xondie Says:

    Anthony,

That is not a trivial thing to do, so there is not a quick way to do that.

  92. Anthony Says:

    Dang…okay…..
